Moscow: “third Rome” or “fourth Jerusalem”?

The idea of Moscow being the third Rome implied a double meaning: on the one hand, it reflected the spiritual continuity through Byzantium, on the other hand the imperial and political continuity of the by-then defunct Byzantine Empire.
